OWFL Scholarship Recipient - 1998

Sandy Palumbo
Father Leo Austin, Whitby

The 1998 Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse Scholarship was awarded to an individual who developed into an excellent lacrosse player and team leader during her high school years.
Sandy Palumbo was a member of Father Leo Austin's Varsity Lacrosse Team for four years. During that time she demonstrated excellent commitment and a hard work ethic. She was a role model and team leader for her peers through her enthusiasm and positive attitude both on and off the field. Her dedication was rewarded through various awards and titles including: "Most Improved Player" and LOSSA ALL-STAR in her grade 12 year, Team Co-Captain and "Most Valuable Player" in her OAC year, as chosen by her coaches and teammates. Her final year was also capped off by winning a LOSSA GOLD MEDAL, a goal which Sandy and her teammates worked very hard to achieve.
Sandy also dedicated many hours helping to coach the younger lacrosse players at Austin. This is reflective of her desire to help others excel at a sport which she found to be an extremely rewarding aspect of her high school years.
As well as being an integral part of the Lacrosse Program at Austin, Sandy was highly involved in Lacrosse outside of school. She played in the Lakeshore League for two years and was a member of the Durham Stingers U-20 Club Team for three years. As a member of the Stingers she served as one of the team captains and helped lead the team to a Provincial "A" Championship in 1997, and Provincial "B" Championship in 1998. Sandy is not only a dedicated player but she has also become a certified lacrosse official. Her involvement included officiating at many of the Junior Varsity Tournaments as well as helping out when needed during the LOSSA schedule.
Academically, Sandy was an outstanding student. She was on the Honour Roll during all five of her high school years and graduated with an 83% average. She is presently attending Sir Wilfred Laurier University where she is continuing with her lacrosse career.
Sandy is an excellent example of a student-athlete who set very high goals for herself and worked hard to attain them. An extremely coachable and determined individual, she was truly deserving of this scholarship award.
